Quick Summary
For a day by day recap with quotes from the players, click on these words over here.
The game began with a group of only 15 players who met live in an Opening Chat. Many of them were new players to the game and assumed that they would be the only ones playing. Meanwhile, 11 other players secretly began the game on a Secret Mission, hidden from the others. Each was given one name of someone else in the game. They would privately message them to also learn the name that person was given.
Contacts rose quickly. Taylor: “THERE ARE SO MANY OF US! I can't believe it, I seriously can't ...”
Back in the public game, an initial conflict began when citizens became torn between choosing to eliminate less active players or more suspicious players. Players like Anneliese and Jakub chose to target less active Tyler, while Leena, Miles, Jessica, Reicheru, and Judith would vote for their biggest suspect, Jakub. Jennipher, a very chatty player, becomes a focus. Anneliese divulged her special role to Jennipher the night she learns of it, but a suspicious remark made by Jennipher causes Anneliese to give her false information in the middle of their conversation.
The first vote came down to a dramatic tie. Live in Exile chat, the players were given 18 minutes to discuss or change their vote. Jakub, who had overslept and forgot to change his vote (which would have saved him), came in the middle of the chat to find the players discussing whether or not to Exile him. Carrie and Jennipher both switched their votes to Jakub (citizen), who in turn was Exiled.
The exile would become a great target of speculation, as many players began to accuse the Jakub voters of having at least one spy in their midst. Though the spy was Jessica, she would continue to be the least suspected among them for quite a while.
Meanwhile in secret land, all of the 11 players have met each other. This triggers their next task: solve a series of complex puzzles divided between the 11. Once they do they can unlock the password to their own spies AIM name. On day five four secret mission players unlocked their password and began talking with each other. This triggered an instant reveal of Identities as all 11 players received news of whether they were a Spy or a Citizen.
All players, both secret and main, then competed in a race through puzzles challenge to win safety from an Exile & Imprisonment. Some struggled at a notoriously difficult connect-the-dots, while some players, like Judith and Bebe, raced through. In an effort to eliminate someone that could be a threat and could trace back to the spies, Leena was Imprisoned.
Anneliese made an effort to spread knowledge of her Builder role by revealing it to three people starting as early as day three. The role instructs her to get other people to post passwords in their private confessionals. If she gets enough people, she wins a reward. But if a Spy posts the password, the reward disappears. She revealed the factual details to two players initially - Reicheru and Tenchi, based on pre-alignment interactions. Tenchi, a spy, would use this role information to continue to manipulate Anneliese and those she told of the role throughout the game.
The Voting Block of Leena, Reicheru, Judith, Miles, and Jessica becomes even more suspicious to some, while others are suspicious of Jennipher, Carrie, and the loving Judith, who claims she knows there are three spies. In the 2nd exile, Tyler was eliminated.
Immediately after the exile, the season's twist is revealed to the cast - they have found more survivors of the government's attack. 11 more players join the game live in the middle of a chat revealing the Race Results. Many people in the "original" group become angry and worried, as their spy theories are quickly thrown out the window. Many players become confused, and others become outraged. Spy Headquarters welcomes three new Spies: Claire, Bebe, and Raphael.
Judith accuses Bebe of being a spy with deadly accuracy, though Bebe and many other players pass it off as Judith being jealous of Bebe's performance at the challenge. Judith had accused Bebe of cheating. Suspicions of Judith continue to grow.
Audrey from the new group is Imprisoned as a threat. Trina tells Bebe (Spy) of her Do or Die power. The next day Trina tells a second Spy. Taylor, as the Gift Giver, begins giving out special powers once per round. One power, a Citizen Role Investigation, is given to Bruce. Jack and Tenchi's bond continues to grow, as they convince each other that pretending to be suspicious of one another will save them from both exiles and imprisonments. Reicheru creates a fictional seer role to give her opinions more weight.
Many people from the new group feel isolated and make an effort to reach out to the original group. Among them are Claire and Bruce. Some people become suspicious of this action but dismiss it for the ongoing tension between Judith and Bebe.
Reicheru, who has become quite close with Judith, is convinced that she is a spy. She employs Jack, Tenchi, and Anneliese to help her eliminate Judith at the next exile. The vote comes close between Carrie and Judith. Judith is revealed as a Citizen.
Suspicions immediately turn to Reicheru, who convinced her friends that she was "100% Judith was a spy." Judith leaves behind a touching letter to the Burg.
Arthur posts in the Burg asking people with roles to tell him and he will keep it a secret and tell everyone. This causes him to have massive suspicion. Claire brings color to the Spies by offering different opinions and a unique personality. She confers with other Spies to decide how to perfectly word her posts in the Burg. Claire: “i want everything (CONCISELY) that you guys know about everyone and anything” Bebe: “Claire is starting to pinch my leg a little. By that, I mean that she is annoying me and I want to slap her so she'll stop!”
Shane got his Decision Maker power for Episode 4. He could save any number of people, but faced self-votes if he did so. Taylor gives Raphael two extra votes (with a self-vote) and herself Mismatch. Taylor tells Trina she is the Gift Giver; Trina tells Taylor she can Do or Die. Bruce tells Taylor that Reicheru does not have a Citizen role, she tells Trina. Taylor and Trina bond and trust each other as Citizens. Reicheru is caught in a lie.
Anneliese receives a Bunker Progress Report. She only has 6 points. Anneliese: “Are you SURE I only have 6? I should have 14 by now from the people I told... gah!” This means a spy has not posted the secret word in their confessional in an attempt to not blow up the bunker and notify Anneliese of a traitor. Anneliese reveals her role and this update publicly in the Burg, starting a raucous discussion where various accusations take place. Jack, Reicheru, and Tenchi are the main 3 suspected. Their points do not add up. Jennipher and Jessica are also involved, but to a lesser extent. Many people admit they didn’t actually post it. Some confusion arises over how to post the word. After much quabbling and rules clarifying it was narrowed down to Tenchi – 2 Jack – 1 Reicheru – 2. With Tenchi the Spy being the liar. But there is also confusion on Jennipher/Jessica at this moment. No one knows who is lying - Tenchi, Reicheru, Anneliese, or Jack, though most people do not think it is Tenchi.
Knowing this greatly endangers the citizens within the group, Reicheru reacts strongly. "This is a fucking FIASCO. Anneliese, I blame you ENTIRELY. You've probably gone and killed us all, with yourself as first on the hit list. If you have ANY decency left, if you have finally shed the delusion that somehow sacrificing half the fucking citizens in the burg in the HOPE of perhaps getting ONE FUCKING SPY is somehow NOBLE AND GOOD, you had better SHUT THE HELL UP and don't attempt to even suggest that any of us is SAFE!!!!!!!!"
Anneliese taking her role public would lead to the most memorable moment of the game, and is now only referred to as the "Bunker Drama".
Taylor does a Mismatch (a Gift she gave herself) with Trina and Anneliese and is told Match, making her believe they are both Citizens. Taylor tells this to Trina. Trina tells Bruce. Taylor tells Trina not to tell Anneliese this information. At this point there is a gigantic group of Citizens who trust each other and no Spy is aware of any of this happening over the past few days. Trina tells Anneliese about the Gift Giver and that they were matched. Trina leaves out who the Gift Giver is (Spies are not certain who it is).
Trina tells all to Anneliese, including the fact that Bruce did a Citizen Investigation on Reicheru. Earlier Reicheru, who is a Citizen, had made up a fake Seer role to Anneliese, so his words would carry more weight within group discussions. They did, which is why Jakub and Judith were falsely Exiled as Citizens. This information sends huge warning flags out to Anneliese, who gets more information from Trina and spreads this information around. Because Reicheru is involved in the Builder drama there is incredible suspicion on her.
Trina, who had been spreading information left and right even though she was plead with and pleaded to other people to keep it a secret, started spilling everything to Bebe, who Trina trusted but Anneliese and Taylor did not. One by one she spills everything to Bebe who immediately posts it in the Spy Headquarters. Bebe tells Shane she thought he saved Anneliese and he admits to Bebe this and also his self-votes. Jack posted the first public thread in the Burg about the Builder Drama, causing information to pour out.
Jessica attempts to blow up the Bunker by posting past codewords. It fails. Through Tenchi she learns of the newest codeword. She posts it. The Bunker blows up.
At Imprisonment, Anneliese is Imprisoned. Shane, however, activates his Decision Maker ability, successfully preventing her from being Imprisoned. Though Jack and Shane seemed to trust one another prior to this event, Jack is responsible for taking Shane's claim public.
Shane tells Jack that he Saved someone. Jack incorrectly believes it was the result of a Gift. There is confusion over whether or not it was a gift or a role, and many people immediately claim suspicions of Shane lying about receiving a gift. Trina, who knows that Taylor is the gift giver, is aware of every gift given, and heads this front.
In order to take away from the stress of the week, a Costume Party is hosted by Sam, which includes suspicion threads and opinions on players. Among the suspicion threads, Anneliese, Taylor, and Trina rank extremely low.
In a stroke of genius, Tenchi and Jessica manage to dodge suspicion based on their role in the Builder Drama by making others believe their words were not counted due to a fake rules clause.
Anneliese, in an attempt to yet again throw off the spies, publicly states that she lied about her entire role, even though the information pinpointed 2 sets of 1 person being a spy. When Tenchi successfully dissuades her from analyzing the situation mathematically, Anneliese gives up on using the bunker for any viable information.
The suspicion of Jennipher from earlier in the game comes back to haunt her. Nearly everyone votes for her. Jennipher is lynched, and revealed as a citizen. In a surprise announcement, the citizens have another chance through a double-exile, and Carrie, another long-time suspect, is eliminated. She is revealed as a citizen. This is memorably one of the most destructive and least fruitful episodes in Spies history. All evidence was thrown away and every spy effectively knew of every role by this point, fully allowing them to manipulate the game.
Shane decides that in the event he is eliminated, he will pass his Decision Maker role to Raphael, a spy. Shane is Imprisoned.
Many become insistent that they must find at least two spies within the original group, beginning a long and fruitless quest to target only one of the 15 “originals.” The group in power guns for Miles after he reveals to her privately that he has a role, "The Inheritor," which obtains citizen roles after they have been eliminated. They believe this is a Spy role.
Shane is Imprisoned live, and Matthew goes public with his opinions that Anneliese is both a bitch and a spy. Matthew, regarded as one of the more annoying and least helpful players, refuses to work together with others and begins to cast his own stray votes.
The Awards Ceremony Begins. Many awards are handed out. The Official Spy List is posted. Arthur, Jessica, Miles, Tenchi, and Bebe are the Top Five Spies, in that order. Raphael, Taylor, and Trina are the three most likely to be Citizens.
On the night of exile, many strong emotions are shared. Exile #5. The vote comes down to three people: Jack, Anneliese, and Miles. Everyone is pushing for one of those three. The vote ends up 6-6-4 with Jack and Anneliese tied. Jack says goodbye to Anneliese. At the live exile, no votes are revealed. Instead, Trina has activated her Do or Die ability in an effort to save Anneliese. She chooses to void the exile votes and instead pick one target. If the target is a spy, they are exiled and she will stay. If they are a citizen, Trina is exiled and the target will stay. At the very last minute, Trina uses Do or Die on Jordan, despite the fact that her two top suspects in her Spy List are Tenchi and Jessica. Jordan was pressuring Trina earlier that night to use the Do or Die and Trina felt that was suspicious. Jordan is revealed to be a Citizen. Trina is Exiled. Trina is revealed to be a Citizen.
Trina: “I made the wrong move or wrong choice and here I am exiled. I wish I thought or had more time to think about who I would use my power on rather than rush it on Jordan. Taylor pushed me to the brink of using this and I am just upset because I have given her support throughout the game and she does nothing but hurt me. What a bitch and to think I thought she was genuine.”
This is regarded by many as one of the most confusing, hilarious, and disappointing moments in Spies history.
Immediately after Trina's departure, Anneliese decides to set up a group of citizens she has confirmed. For the first time in the entire game, a large group of people who are ALL (probably) citizens are brought together:
Taylor, The Gift Giver
Jordan, a Confirmed Citizen from Trina's Do or Die
Anneliese, The Builder, confirmed by the gift Taylor used on Trina to identify them as the same alignment.
Jack, semi-confirmed by some because of Anneliese's Role and the ensuing Bunker Drama
Reicheru, semi-confirmed by some because of Anneliese's role and the ensuing Bunker Drama / false Seer confession
With a group of 5 citizens, they strongly believe they can defeat the 5 spies. Anneliese, Jack, and Reicheru develop a plan to place equal suspicion on each of them from each of them, in order to prevent their Imprisonment. Anneliese also asks each member to PM her their individual suspicions. When the final tally is made up, Jordan has not responded, and two spies rank in the Top 3 of the list. Miles, who is listed as #1, is decided upon as the next target by the group.
Anneliese's public role claims / lies / withdrawn role claims finally catch up to her, and she is Imprisoned by the Spies. Immediately after Anneliese's Imprisonment, a challenge is held, and the winner will be given a private investigation. Despite Jack publicly saying that he will target Bebe this week, his group gives her the investigation during the challenge. She uses it on Jessica the Spy, saying that Jessica is now a confirmed citizen. Few remaining players question this move enough to eliminate either one of them.
Miles, the Inheritor, has Inherited the Builder role and is attempting to reconstruct the Bunker. He reveals his role publicly. Reicheru, misreading something, becomes convinced that Miles is a Spy who Inherited the role. She and many others who have suspected him get him Exiled.
The only time in the entire game anybody pushed to get out a Spy happens. Jack makes a post in the Burg urging everyone to vote out Bebe. He feels that voting out Bebe would gain information on Jessica since she claimed to investigate her. Resistance between the five Spies is quick. Spies immediately post that they don’t think this is a good idea. Bebe gets online and talks with Jack and manages to convince him she’s not a Spy.
This week becomes another double-exile, and Jack is targeted almost unanimously by the entire cast. He has been passionately fighting for the Citizens for the last 30 days with solid reasoning, long posts, inquiries, and discoveries. For all of his work he is Exiled.
Jack: “In any event, I think this is the last shot we truly have. If we screw this one up, I think it's a pretty solid game over, and a humiliating one at that. I mean really. It's gotta be under a 1/10 shot that we could go the entire game without exiling a single Spy. That's pretty pathetic.”
The Past Eight Exiles
Exile #7. Last Stand. A Citizens’ group is formed containing Reicheru, Taylor, Claire, Matthew, Brooks, and Arthur. They agree to vote Bruce and spread it around publicly. The Spies decide to have some people defend Bruce. Bruce is extremely upset with this latest move in a series of disappointing failures, posts an angry goodbye, and announces he will not return until the Finale.
To put icing on the cake, the eliminated citizens receive one last message of hope. They can send one statement as a group that is under 20 words and 100 characters. It states: "Confirmed: Jordan / Taylor lead vote. Straying = Spy. Vote TOGETHER. We support UNCONFIRMED Bruce. Vote Jess."
Most of the note is ignored, however the vote changes to Tenchi the next day. Reicheru sends a message to everyone to vote out Tenchi. Claire PM’s Bruce and tells him she suspects Arthur and that there has to be a Spy in the Citizen Group. Bruce: “You've got my vote (Claire the Spy). I hope that you can convince the others to vote with you, I'd love to see the spies manipulated around a bit, for a change, I like the way you think.” Claire convinces Bruce to vote for Arthur. Seeing this as their opportunity, in a dramatic gamble, all 5 Spies then jump on the Arthur vote, Exiling him from the game. The spies successfully sweep the game in one of the most impressive efforts that Spies has seen.
Massive credit goes to Ryan (Anneliese, Zander) for writing this up. I edited it and added a bucnh of words and pictures. Thank you so much Ryan!
