This is one issue I was thinking about that you guys as a group might want to consider possibly doing. I hesitate to suggest this because I know you are all excited to play the game and eager to dip your toes into playing hard as a Spy. You want to do stuff and contribute and make friends and play hard and this is basically asking you to do the opposite, well at least appear to do the opposite publicly. Plus I love watching unique and intense spy strategies and this one is as boring as it gets!
But here's the problem, and I'm sure you've encountered it in other games. In every game some people are 'inactive.' I firmly believe that someone who played a mafia game for two hours a day would be considered inactive if everyone else played for eight so perhaps it's inescapable. Anyway, it's no secret that those who are inactive (or replaced) are often viewed as citizens. Spies, as the theory goes, are trying to deceive us. They're trying to get rid of citizens and have extra knowledge. How could that inactive guy - that guy who has no clue what is going on most of the time, who could not care less about the game, and barely shows up for an hour every three days, how could he fit the profile of a Spy?
Now I'm not saying that way of thinking is right every time but it does have some pangs of truth to it. And certainly you might employ certain aspects of that into your spy strategy. But what might work would be to have one person, at least publicly, appear to look like an inactive, perhaps while doing things behind the scenes.
It's up to each of you individually if it's something you would want to do, I probably personally wouldn't do it because it might be boring and unfun and certainly you don't need someone like that to win Spies haha. But it's something to think and talk about!
The thing about it though is that you kinda need to plan it from the start. You can't really play hard or play honestly during the first week or two and then 'go inactive' after that as part of the plan. You kinda have to 'not care' from the start and then just pitter out some time during the game. (of course many inactives might come back with a burst of activity but usually it doesn't last for very long)
So that might be something you want to think about. Or you could just vote out all the inactives that would solve the problem too!
